The second historic event last week was the 2007 Student Showcase at the Alex Theatre. Again, the significance of the event was due to the joint sponsorship of the Glendale Education Foundation, the City of Glendale, the Alex Theatre, the Glendale News Press, the School District, the Association of REALTORS and other local business establishments. The evening brought together an entertaining and diverse array of students who demonstrated their artistic and musical skills and talents. The program began with a high spirited, energetic, and complex dance, flag and drill team routines, followed by an exquisite performance by an Asian string quartet and a colorful and energetic Ballet Mexico Folklorico Troupe. The first half of the program concluded with a humorous Shakespearean adaptation called, "The Fifteen Minute Hamlet."

During the second half of the performance, the audience experienced a wide range of musical and drama performances that included a Handbell Choir, an Advanced Dance group, and the Charismatics Chamber Choir. A Davidian and Mariamian Educational Foundation dance troupe presented the national and cultural dance of native Armenia. The evening concluded with a dramatic presentation and a rousing Jazz Orchestra.

These two historic events give us hope and confidence that while we may be diverse in background, and while we may have varied cultural, social, and religious beliefs and practices, all of us have a common respect and appreciation for the depth and breadth of the academic, musical, and artistic talent and accomplishments of Glendale students. All of us have much to be proud and thankful for the strong and joint sponsorship of community groups, business, charitable, teachers, and parents. Events such as we have experienced this past week lead us to believe that our community can work together, honor its youth, reward academic and artistic talent, and develop partnerships that bring out the best in our children, community, and country.
