Just cruisin' down the boulevard

Annual community car show and street party features classic vehicles, live music and family fun.

While more tank-sized SUVs cruise down streets on flashy chrome wheels, the city of Glendale will offer auto lovers a chance to switch gears at the 14th annual Cruise Night Car Show and Street Party and re-visit a time when gas cost 36 cents a gallon and seat belts were just starting to catch on.

An estimated 35,000 people of all ages are expected to stroll down Brand Boulevard to view classic cars from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. July 21, said Ritch Wells, public information officer for the city.

"This is one of the premier car shows in Southern California," Wells said. "For some owners in the show, their cars are not only their hobby, but their life."

Pre-1973 cars will line up with their owners on Brand between Broadway and Milford Street while judges, including Edd "Kookie" Byrnes from the 1960s television detective series "77 Sunset Strip," decide which vehicles out of the 400 present stand out from the rest in quality and style.

"We have such a range of cars that show up," Wells said. "Last year, we got everything from old pickup trucks to the "Munster Koach" from the 1960s television series, "The Munsters."

Reflecting the era of the displayed cars, oldies bands will perform on the main stage located at the corner of Brand Boulevard and Milford Street. The entertainment lineup, emceed by former KRTH-FM (101) host "Mr. Rock 'n' Roll" Brian Beirne, will kick off with Soul artist Al Wilson, followed by surf-rock band The Chatays, "Poetry in Motion" singer Johnny Tillotson and close with doo-wop group The Marcels.

For those who can't remember when The Marcels' hit "Blue Moon" first hit radio waves, there will be several booths and displays and games for the kids while a dance and hula-hoop contest will take place at the Awards Stage at Brand and Wilson Avenue.

"This is one of the few car shows where you can view classic cars and do things with your family at the same time," said Cruise Night committee chairman Ross Phares. "It's a great and free family event where there's something for everyone."
