Tlaquepaque, Mexico, has been one of Glendale's sister cities for 25 years and Rosarito Beach has been a sister city for 12 years. The city of Glendale supports the Sister City program by donating fire trucks, water pumpers and police equipment, but it's up to the Glendale-Mexico Sister Cities Committee to raise funds for the program. According to Olivares, who has been committee president for 10 years, last year's summer barbecue raised $1,000.

Committee members visit Tlaquepaque and Rosarito Beach for various cultural exchanges, including ceramic arts competitions. Also visiting the sister cities are English teachers and those who teach medical techniques.

  • Armenian and Greek music kicked off the third annual Glendale Marketplace Summer Music Series on Sunday. Starring was the Tom Bozigian Trio, featuring Bozigian on the dhol drum, Nick Movsesian on clarinet, and Alex Piperkov on keyboard.

Bozigian has been teaching Armenian and Greek dancing for 30 years at the Glendale Civic Auditorium on Thursday nights. This year's summer class is made up of 85 students, a few of which held hands and kicked up their heels while the trio played in front of the Frog Fountain at the Marketplace. Leading the dancers was Bozigian's wife, Sheree Bozigian, who runs the dance program at Long Beach City College.

Audience members included: Noemi Mesropian, Maret Petrosyan and son Anthony Kotcharian, Patrick Vartan, wife, Karen Vartan, and son Shant Vartan.

This coming Sunday's Glendale Marketplace Summer Music Series, from 5 to 7 p.m., will feature Carlos Velasco. All performances are free and take place in front of the Frog Fountain.
