History, dogs top agenda

FROM THE FOOTHILLS:

August 16, 2007

The Crescenta Valley Town Council recognized a home on Los Amigos Street in La Crescenta, belonging to Dianne Thompson, with the first Honored Historic Home Award. I brought this idea forward as a way to demonstrate that our council truly appreciates the historic homes and to recognize these important community assets.

As Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich spoke at the La Crescenta Library groundbreaking ceremony, the Town Council made its largest donation ever for the artwork that will be inlaid in the floor of the entry area of the library. A medallion is being commissioned by the Historical Society of Crescenta Valley.

The library should be vacated around Sept. 15 and is scheduled to reopen in September 2009.

Concern in our community regarding unleashed dogs at Two Strike Park has been an issue we have dealt with this summer.

Dog owners — those who leash and unleash their dogs — attended our June meeting, and both expressed an overwhelming desire for a local dog park.

The Town Council wrote a letter to Antonovich on this issue, and he is forming a task force to determine the best location for a dog park in our community.

Developing a dog park may take some time to complete, because there are many steps in the process, especially identifying funding. The good news is that it is on Antonovich’s radar.

It is important to remind those who continue to have their dogs unleashed at Two Strike Park that it is against the law. Sheriffs will cite violators. The law was never intended to make dogs or their owners unhappy, but rather to keep park users of our community safe.

With mutual respect, we can all share and enjoy the park. I am sure most unleashed dogs have conscientious owners who know their dogs to be socialized and harmless. But regardless of your dog’s temperament, the law still applies. Please leash your dog.
