Bell posts road win

Former Crescenta Valley High star pitcher strikes out five for Cedar Rapids in 5-4 victory.

GLENDALE — The following are updates on area athletes in minor league baseball.

Trevor Bell (Crescenta Valley High, 2005) Cedar Rapids Kernels, starting pitcher: Bell, a former All-Area Player of the Year, has enjoyed a productive August. Now a member of the Kernels, a Class A Midwest League affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Bell has picked up two victories this month.

His latest came Saturday. Bell, a right-hander, struck out five and scattered seven hits in six innings to help Cedar Rapids record a 5-4 road victory against the Wisconsin Rattlers.

Bell also picked up a win Aug. 8 against the South Bend Silver Hawks.

He struck out six and didn’t allow a run in eight innings to power Cedar Rapids to a 2-0 win.

Through Saturday, the 20-year-old Bell is 6-4 with a 4.53 earned-run average.

He’s struck out 81 in 19 appearances.

Errol Simonitsch (St. Francis High, 2000): Fort Myers Miracle, starting pitcher: Simonitsch earned another victory Sunday for the Fort Myers Miracle, who are a Class A advanced squad of the Minnesota Twins.

The left-hander allowed four runs — two earned — on eight hits over six innings to propel Fort Myers to an 11-4 win against the host Lakeland Flying Tigers in a Florida State League contest.

Simonitsch also struck out six.

In four starts in August, Simonitsch is 2-0 with a 6.63 ERA.

Through Sunday, Simonitsch is 3-0 with a 6.00 ERA. He’s struck out 17 in 27 innings with the Miracle.

Bill Spottiswood (Glendale Community College, 2005): relief pitcher, Yakima Bears: The former Vaqueros standout has continued to provide quality appearances for the Bears, an Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate who are members of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League.

The 22-year-old Spottiswood, a right-hander, is 2-2 with eight saves and a 1.72 ERA.

He’s struck out 18 and allowed 26 hits in 53 innings.

Spottiswood has notched five saves this season. He picked up saves Saturday and Sunday during a series against the Tri-City Devils.

On Saturday, Spottiswood pitched around a hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning in Yakima’s 5-3 win. He then struck out two in the ninth to help Yakima preserve a 4-3 victory on Sunday.

Brandon Higelin (Crescenta Valley High, 2001) Lake Elsinore Storm, relief pitcher: Now a reliever, Higelin would like to turn his season around with less than a month remaining.

With Lake Elsinore, which is a Class-A Advanced California League affiliate of the San Diego Padres, Higelin is 0-3 with a 5.52 ERA. The left-hander has struck out 32 and allowed 55 hits in 44 innings.

Al Quintana (Glendale Community College, 2002) Dunedin Blue Jays, third baseman: In limited playing time, Quintana is batting .243 with one home run and 12 runs batted in.

He went hitless in a pair of at bats Friday during a 4-3 victory against the Tampa Yankees in a Class A Advanced Florida State League game.

Quintana, who also played at Cal State Northridge, collected two hits and scored a run in Dunedin’s 8-2 loss to the Jupiter Hammerheads on Aug. 11.
