Along the scouting trail

October 05, 2007

Junior Girl Scout Troop 354 from Lincoln Elementary held a yard sale this summer and had many good books left unsold, so the girls decided to donate them all to the Lincoln library. The librarian, Mrs. Van Amburg, said that donations are even more important now due to lack of funding from the state.

In celebration of the 95th anniversary of Girl Scouts, the Mt. Wilson Vista Council, which encompasses the foothill area, is hosting a gala dinner and auction on Saturday, Nov. 3.

The event is being held at the historic California Club in downtown Los Angeles. Los Angeles Times Sports Columnist and author Bill Plaschke will serve as the evening host, and four outstanding individuals including Steven Peterman and Annette Castro Ramirrez, both of La Cañada, will be honored for their commitment to the Girl Scout mission.

The Girl Scout Gala will include both a silent and live auction. All funds raised will help Mt. Wilson Vista Council provide more than 9,000 girls with opportunities to participate in council programs. Tickets for Girl Scouts – Mt. Wilson Vista Council’s annual gala dinner and auction are $225 each. Table sponsorships and tribute book advertising space are available. Auction donations are also welcome. David Khudaverdyan, a recent graduate of Crescenta Valley High School, was honored on Aug. 25 by Boy Scout Troop 319, family and friends for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.

David began his scouting adventure as a Tiger Cub at Dunsmore Elementary School. David’s Eagle Project included landscaping an area in front of The Church of the Lighted Window in La Cañada. The project involved planning and supervising removal of foliage, rocks, and stumps, preparing the soil and planting new plants and flowers.

In addition to Scouting, David has been intensely involved in Crescenta Valley High School’s robotics program, serving as lead computer programmer during his junior and senior years, and participating in JPL Invention Challenges and national competitions. David currently plans on attending Glendale Community College for two years before transferring to the University of California at Irvine to pursue a major in computer science and engineering.
