The Poet Laureate program honors the achievements of John Steven McGroarty who served as the California State Poet Laureate from 1933 to 1944, raising the visibility of the Rancho Tujunga community and nurturing the area as a home to artists and writers who enjoy the seclusion and beauty of the foothills.

The goal of the program is to elect an author who is a good poet, an able public speaker and someone who has a history of service to the community. The elected Laureate is often invited to speak at gatherings, provide insights and reflections on public concerns or compose an ode to a local icon.

The two-year term of service is considered not only a rank of high honor, but also a respected position of community service.

It’s not required that the person reside in the region, however, it is essential that they are regularly involved with or hold some stake in the Sunland/Tujunga area.

Applicants should be of good character and eager to share what they love about the area with others; well studied in their craft; have developed an individual voice in their compositions; and are at least 18 years of age.

Applicants are to submit three writing samples. At least one piece should comment on a local theme.

Several essay questions will gauge their interest and involvement in the area.

The application deadline is Dec. 20. The Poetry and Literature Committee will evaluate the submissions and invite several finalists to a formal presentation.

The application fee is $15. Applications are available at the McGroarty Arts Center, located at 7570 McGroarty Terrace, (818) 352-5285. For further information, contact former laureate Marlene Hitt at (818) 951-1041 or via her email landmhitt@cs.com.
