Crescenta Valley Town Council Candidates

I believe the single most important issue facing our community is the need to think beyond map boundaries and consider the well-being and “big picture” of the entire Foothill corridor. At a time when density, responsible growth and conformity of design are major concerns, the Town Council must work with its neighboring jurisdictions of La Cañada, Glendale, Tujunga and Sunland. A volunteer group named the Crescenta Valley Community Assn. is an umbrella organization that will work with the various jurisdictions, share information and resources, and encourage responsible development in the Crescenta Valley.

We all care about and should become involved in what happens a few miles down Foothill Boulevard, including the Foothill Design Committee, Verdugo Hills Golf Course, Mountain Oaks, Montrose Shopping Park or opposing Home Depot.

What is the first goal you hope to accomplish on the council if elected/re-elected?

As a member of CV DOGS, we have collected more than 1,260 local signatures in support of my first goal, which is getting a dog park for our community.

Do you support bringing a dog park to the area? If so, where should it go? If not, why?

The most logical place for a dog park is near the western end of Crescenta Valley Park. This area is underutilized. This park is 32 acres, and we do not want to take away any current sports fields. Ample parking, watering systems and grass are already available, and the land is owned by Los Angeles County. Some critics say that parks are for people, not dogs, but dog owners are a large segment and an important part of our community.

CHARLIE BEATTY

Describe a personal strength that would be a valuable asset to the council, and describe a personal weakness that could be a drawback.

I think my greatest strength is inclusiveness. I like most everyone. I like people and their ideas even when they don’t agree with mine. I have an ability to see both sides of an issue and draw people together to accomplish a common goal, even if they are different from one another in philosophy, politics or religion. I believe people feel comfortable and accepted and see me as a conciliator.
