GLENDALE — Their stellar high school careers came to an end.

For the second consecutive year, Sarah Salvo and Christine Cho saw their bid to compete in the WSCGA-CIF State Championship fall just short.

Salvo fired a four-over-par 76 and Cho carded an 80 on Monday at the CIF-Women’s Southern California Golf Assn. Championship at The SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta.

The top six scores from non-qualifying teams from Monday’s 18-hole round qualified for the state championship, which will take place at 8 a.m. Thursday at Poppy Hills Country Club in Pebble Beach. Monday’s cut was 74.

The University of New Mexico-bound Salvo, a Glendale resident and a senior on the Sherman Oaks Notre Dame High squad, had two birdies, 10 pars and six bogeys.

“Everything was pretty even,” said Salvo, who captured her fourth straight Mission League individual championship this season and helped the Knights win their sixth straight league crown. “I hit a lot of good shots, but I didn’t make enough birdies.

“I’m sad and disappointed that I couldn’t make it to state, but not many people even get this far.”

Cho, who will attend Harvard next fall, struggled throughout her round, finishing with nine pars, seven bogeys, one birdie and one double-bogey.

Cho, who helped Crescenta Valley win its second straight Pacific League championship in October, said she had difficulty with her long game.

“It was nice to make it to the finals again, but I just didn’t have a great round,” Cho said. “I mostly had trouble with my long game.

“For some reason, I hit the ball bad. I couldn’t get close to the hole on my approach shots.”

Crescenta Valley Coach Ken Johnson said Cho proved to be an ideal four-year athlete for the Falcons, who finished the season at 26-4.

“It’s been a pleasure to have her on the team the last four years,” said Johnson, whose team placed seventh at the CIF Southern Section Central Team Divisional Oct. 29 in Riverside County. “She’s a great golfer who works very hard.

“I wish I had clones of her. I hope her work ethic has inspired some of her other teammates.”

Jenny Shin of Torrance earned low-medalist honors with a 68.

Danielle Frazier of La Costa Canyon in San Diego was second (69) and Tiffany Lua of Los Altos was third (71). Lee Lopez of La Serna carded a 72 to finish fourth, Carlsbad’s Rachel Morris had a 72 for fifth place, Beverly Vatananugulkit of Cerritos had a 72 for sixth and Poway’s Brittany Mai was seventh with a 73.

Burroughs sophomore Emily Tubert fired a 77.

Torrance won the team competition with a 380. Cypress placed second (400) and Cerritos finished third (406). The top three teams move on to the State Championships.
