Boot Camp for teachers

November 16, 2007|By Helen Kantor

Red ribbons weren’t the only thing dotting school campuses recently.

Teachers at Mountain Avenue Elementary had red faces as they huffed and puffed their way into better shape with West Coast Boot Camp.

For the second year, the teachers took park in the fitness camp that conducted classes after school in support of Red Ribbon week.

“The teachers want to become healthier and make better choices,” said principal Rebecca Witt, who said that the exercise regime is in line with the values that are the basis of Red Ribbon Week.

The class includes strength training, cardio fitness, and stretching. Anywhere from nine to 15 teachers participate in after school sessions five days a week.

After working with teachers, West Coast, a La Cañada-based business, also started offering students a fitness class free of charge so they could get in shape for the school’s jog-a-thon that was held on Nov. 9.

This fundraiser, staged by Mountain Avenue Committee for Kids (MACK), raised money for the school’s media center, a computer assistant and the campus library.
