City seeks banner nominations

City officials on Thursday announced that administrators for a new military recognition banner program will begin accepting applications and donations, just two days after the City Council approved the banners.

Applications to be honored on a banner — which will be installed on 101 utility poles along Glendale Avenue between San Fernando Road and Doran Street — are available at municipal public counters, and on the city’s website at www.ci.glendale.ca.us.

To be eligible for the program, military personnel must have been activated for duty after Sept. 11, 2001, and be currently deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan.

They must also be a Glendale resident or immediate family member of a resident.

The residency requirement can be waived if military personnel are graduates of local high schools or were Glendale residents before enlisting.

Service members who are employees of a Glendale business are also eligible.

While nomination applications for the banner program are provided through the city, they will be reviewed by the Glendale Chamber of Commerce Citizenship and Patriotism Committee to determine whether all requirements are satisfied.

Completed applications should be sent to Glendale Chamber of Commerce, 200 S. Louise St., Glendale, 91205, Attn: Military Recognition Banner Program.

Donations for the military banner program should be made to the City of Glendale, c/o Military Banners, 613 E. Broadway, Suite 200, Glendale, 91206.
