Service Clubs:

Gateway Kiwanis honor own

November 17, 2007|By BRUCE CAMPBELL

Very often the work people do in our community is not recognized even by their own special groups. The West Glendale Gateway Kiwanis Club had its annual installation dinner at the Masonic Lodge on Oct. 17 and broke that rule. A very special part of the dinner was given to recognizing their members who went beyond the call of duty for the club.

Diego Munoz-Flores was given the award of Kiwanian of the Year for his efforts in guiding and working on so many Kiwanis projects here in Glendale. Longtime member of the Club, Carl Moseley was the recipient of the President’s Award for his work in effectively managing the club’s funds over the past several years. Both members were thanked many times during the evening for their service to our community.

Dave Fortune was installed as the new president of the club by Kiwanis District Officers, Lt. Gov. Harry Hull and Past Lt. Gov. Daryal Gant. Fortune then announced that the year of community support had already begun, and that the club had just sponsored a hole at the Putting Tournament at the Greens in Valencia to benefit the Crescenta Valley High School baseball team at its annual fundraiser.

Other new officers installed were President-elect Bill James, Vice President Don Rich, Secretary Sam EngelJr. and Treasurer Kathy Van Houten. Throughout the evening entertainment was provided by Rebecca Kupperman on the piano and Matt Fortune playing “America the Beautiful” on English hand bells.

West Glendale-Gateway Kiwanis Club meets at noon every Wednesday at the Glendale Masonic Lodge, 544 N. Maryland Ave., Glendale. For more information, call Dave Fortune at (818) 507-6210.

LEOS CLUB ORGANIZING EYEGLASS RECYCLING

Collection boxes for your eyeglasses are being set up in every Glendale Unified school. The Northwest Glendale Lions Club sponsors the Hoover High School Leos Club, which is in charge of the project. The Leos Club is very active in student activities on the Hoover campus. Hoover counselor Kathy Frazer is the advisor to the club.

The Leos Club this year is again working closely with the Glendale Unified School District in handling the program to collect the eyeglasses. The Leos are placing collection boxes for the eye glasses in all the schools in the district. The cost of the boxes is being paid for by the Lions Davies Fund.
