Letter To The Editor

November 30, 2007

Not quite the column he was hoping for

I was amazed to read Dan Kimber’s column about Thanksgiving Day (“There’s so much to be thankful for,” Nov. 23, Education Matters). It began as something a normal history teacher might write.

The wonder of the season, the beautiful trees, the spirit of the original Thanksgiving and how beautiful it was. He wanted to unite us, not divide, love his grandson and be happy.

I yelled to my wife in the kitchen that perhaps he was a good guy after all. Then his nutty side had to come out. He is thankful that our founding fathers developed a Constitution that allows him to be critical of the most powerful man in the world. Obviously he meant Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter. Would you please reprint one of those columns?

He is pleased that some people think he is a “horse’s behind.”

I wonder if it is because he sounds like a Socialist who wants to redistribute wealth and the government to take care of us all, as it will him, at age 55?

I wonder if his teaching the Constitution to his marvelous and grateful diversified students includes the section on “aid and comfort to the enemy” along with the completely free speech rights?

Does he keep track of how many of his indoctrinated, perfectly educated students emerge after graduation are looking forward to a good life of free enterprise, or do they want government jobs or social service employment so they can spend a wonderful life helping people?

I am thankful for a multitude of things. Also that I live in the most prosperous country in the world because of free market capitalism.

JOE MCCLURE
