GLENDALE — The following are odds and ends from the local sports scene.

LORETTA BEGINS TO MULL FUTURE OPTIONS

With the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings having begun Monday in Nashville, many teams have started to map out plans to improve by making offseason acquisitions through trades and free-agent signings.

One player possibly searching for a new team is veteran infielder Mark Loretta, who graduated from St. Francis High in 1989.

It will mark the second consecutive year that Loretta, a two-time All-Star, is a free agent. He signed a one-year deal last winter with the Houston Astros after spending 2006 with the Boston Red Sox.

Loretta, who played in the 2004 and 2006 All-Star Games, played four infield positions with the Astros.

Bob Garber, Loretta’s agent, told the New York Times on Saturday that the New York Yankees and Colorado Rockies have indicated interest in Loretta, who is a .298 career hitter during 13 seasons.

“There’s been talk with the Yankees and the Rockies, but also some other teams,” Garber said. “Nothing is imminent and nothing’s going to happen until the winter meetings.”

Loretta has also played for the Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres.
