Revisiting A Christmas Carol

C.V. High School teacher R. Brent Beerman puts a new spin on classic story.

December 21, 2007|By Charly Shelton

Christmas came early to Crescenta Valley High School last weekend when the high school’s drama department presented “A Christmas Carol,” the timeless classic tale by Charles Dickens. Drama teacher R. Brent Beerman adapted the play for the stage into an award-winning show from Dickens’ original novella.

Beerman’s re-imagining of the tale won honors from a national playwriting contest sponsored by The Butler Little Theatre in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was originally produced there.Beerman brought it home to his drama students, reworked with a few added scenes, and put on a great show.

All of the students had to use British accents for the play, which was very hard for some of them, but they pulled it off quite well.

Kimberly Cox, who played the miserly old Ebeneezer Scrooge, was fantastic. She was perfect for Scrooge — not outwardly yelling all the time, but quietly angry, which made her seem even more cold. But then she turned it right around and got in touch with the spirit of Christmas and became so warm and playful it made your heart glow. Really spectacular.

Overall, the cast was great. This was one of the best shows the CVHS drama department has ever produced. To all involved in the show, congratulations and bravo! I give this play 5 out of 5.
