Cops, Santa converge on Fremont Elementary

December 28, 2007|By Mary O’Keefe

Just before its winter break, Fremont Elementary School got a special visit by Santa Claus escorted by Glendale motorcycle officers.

For over 11 years the Glendale Police Department has made this much anticipated trip to the school to meet with students in the special needs classes.

“I don’t tell them until the day it’s going to happen,” said teacher Colleen Anglin. “They just get so excited.”

As the officers pulled into the school’s cafeteria area they were greeted with cheers from the children. Officers Paul Retcher, Ed Malorif, Tim Linder, David Lerian, Ash Mankarios and Santa let students get a taste of what it was like to be a police officer as they sat on the motorcycle and pretended they were speeding down the highway. They also got a chance to sit in the police SUV that brought Santa.

“These guys [officers] are real heroes to these children,” said teacher Pat Kimbal.

“We love coming here and doing this for the kids,” Linder said. He added that this type of experience allowed children to get to know the police and not to be afraid to approach them.
