GLENDALE — The following are odds and ends from the local sports scene.
VAQUEROS MOVE ON TO POSTSEASON
For the first time since 2003, the Glendale Community College men’s basketball team will compete in the postseason.
The Vaqueros (16-15) will meet host Compton College (16-16) in a Southern California Regional wild-card contest at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The Vaqueros, who lost their final four regular-season games, finished in fifth place in the Western State Conference’s Southern Division.
SPEED SECURES LOFTY LEAGUE HONOR
The St. Francis High boys’ basketball team finished seventh in the tough eight-team Mission League this year, well short of qualifying for the playoffs.
However, junior guard Malik Speed made quite an impression.
Speed was selected by the league’s eight coaches as a member of the all-league second team. He’s the first Golden Knight player to earn all-league accolades since Kevin Peterson in 2006.
Speed averaged 13.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and three assists per game this season. St. Francis finished 10-15 and 3-11 in league.
“With eight teams in our league, it’s pretty hard to get guys on,” St. Francis Coach John Jordan said. “It’s a nice tribute from the other coaches because it means they appreciated how hard he played.”
THREE LOCAL PLAYERS NET ACCOLADES
Two members from the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy girls’ water polo team and one from Flintridge Prep picked up all-league honors.
Kathleen Harper and Shaylyn Stanley of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy were named to the All-Mission League squad. Flintridge Prep’s Patricia McGown was named to the All-Prep League team.
Harper, a senior driver, was named to the all-league first team. Stanley, a sophomore utility player, earned a spot on the all-league second team. The Tologs went 2-13 and 0-10 in league to finish in sixth place.
McGown, a sophomore goalkeeper, secured all-league first-team honors. Flintridge Prep went 0-17 and 0-12 in league for seventh place.
FALCONS TAKE SECOND IN TOURNAMENT
To prepare for their upcoming summer tournament at Dreams Park in Cooperstown, NY, the La Crescenta Falcons 10-year-old baseball team went undefeated in pool play in the Mid-Valley President’s Day Tournament before placing second with a 3-1 record. The Falcons scored 49 runs in four tournament contests.
