Police are sending mixed signals on laws

I am writing in response to Francis Adams’ letter to the Mailbag on Friday (“Traffic stop was an unfair move by police”) regarding her receiving a traffic ticket for not waiting until a pedestrian had reached the opposite curb.

I was in Glendale today on Brand Boulevard waiting to make a right turn onto Broadway. There was a pedestrian crossing and I was waiting to proceed until he reached the opposite curb, and lo and behold, a Glendale Police officer in an SUV who was behind me proceeded to honk at me! The pedestrian hadn’t even reached the opposite curb yet.

So which is it? Are drivers required by law to wait until a pedestrian has reached the opposite curb before proceeding or is it legal to proceed even if a pedestrian has not quite reached the curb?

I, like Adams, have never read where a driver has to wait for a pedestrian in a crosswalk to reach the opposite curb before proceeding.

If this is true, the vast majority of drivers are not following the law regarding this. I personally would like to know.

‘Safe’ water is when it’s time for concern

Regarding “Water supply safe, officials tell resident,” Tuesday: Environmental Protection Agency officials along with the California Regional Water Quality Control Board keep trying to reassure us that the water we drink is safe from chromium 6 even though they’ve investigated it in more than 4,000 sites between Glendale and North Hollywood and found it in several Glendale wells.

Keep in mind these are the same officials who are assuring the public that dumping fluoride in our drinking water is safe, even though it is reportedly known to cause hardening of the bones and cancer. Let’s also add dental fluorosis.

So when they tell us the water is safe, that’s when I start to worry.

Tujunga tax dollars don’t go to Glendale

As a former 36-year resident of Glendale, who for the past year has resided in a retirement community in Pasadena, I read with interest Tujunga resident Herbert Molano’s letter of March 10 regarding “handing out our tax dollars” (“Runaway salaries are a problem for city,” Mailbag).

It is my understanding that Tujunga is not in Glendale, but a part of Los Angeles.
