Seeking the ultimate 10th

Mixed Martial Arts: Glendale resident Roman Mitichyan set to face George Sotiropoulos in major UFC card Wednesday.

GLENDALE — Sherdog.com, arguably the sport of mixed martial arts’ most renowned website, has Roman “The Emperor” Mitichyan’s record listed as 5-1.

Mitichyan insists it’s incorrect, he’s even contacted the site, as he says he has all his fight tapes to prove the validity. But more importantly to him than what his record is now, is what it will be.

“The plan is to make it 10-1,” the Glendale resident said.

Mitichyan (9-1), who trains in Glendale and North Hollywood, will face fellow “The Ultimate Fighter: Team Hughes vs. Team Serra” cast member George Sotiropoulos (8-2) on Wednesday in Broomfield, Colo. in an undercard bout as part of the 12-fight UFC Fight Night, airing live at 7 p.m. on Spike TV.

The three-round welterweight (170 pounds) match is a preliminary fight unscheduled for television time — though it could air if time permits — but nonetheless features two up-and-coming MMA stars.

Mitichyan, whose only MMA loss came nearly five years ago in October of 2003, lasted only one episode on the sixth season of “The Ultimate Fighter” due to an injury. He rebounded with a 23-second submission win, sinking in an ankle lock, against Dorian Price on Dec. 8 on the show’s live season finale on Spike TV.

Also on the card, Sotiropoulos, who made it to the show’s semifinals before an upset loss, made short work of Billy Miles, via rear naked choke 1:36 into the first round for a submission win.

While both seem to be riding a wave of momentum into Wednesday, Sotiropoulos, for one, doesn’t think any of that matters.

“I take one fight at a time,” Sotiropoulos said. “What happened the last time has no bearing or significance because you’re fighting a different opponent.”

Both fighters possess feared ground games, but Sotiropoulos is seen by many to have a more seasoned stand-up game. Nonetheless, the Australian native is confident in his abilities standing or on the ground.

“I feel very comfortable wherever the fight goes,” he said. “I think I’m better on the ground than he is. We’ll see on Wednesday.”
