Janitors picket outside building

More than a dozen picketers marched Thursday outside the State Compensation Insurance Fund building on Central Avenue to protest what they say is inadequate compensation for janitors and custodians.

The building’s janitorial staff, who are members of the Service Employees International Union 1877, held the demonstration in the midst of larger negotiations between janitors citywide and the building’s owners, Prudential Real Estate Investors.

Union organizers say the commercial real estate giants that own many of Los Angeles County’s high-rise office buildings do not pay custodians enough to enable them to afford adequate housing.

The union reached the end of its five-year contract this year and is continuing negotiations for a new contract.
