Masked men rob bank on Glendale Avenue

Two armed, masked men robbed a Bank of the West at 400 N. Glendale Ave. on Friday, prompting police to temporarily divert traffic at North Glendale and Lexington avenues.

Police were still searching for the suspects Friday night, after they fled the scene in what a champagne-colored pickup truck, Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.

Officers later found the truck, which they said was stolen, abandoned with the engine running in the 300 block of Cedar Street, Lorenz said.

“They got away,” he said.

Police responded to calls from the bank at about 5:35 p.m., he said. By 5:55, officers had cordoned off the bank parking lot, steering away at least two customers.

No shots were fired, and there were no reported injuries, Lorenz said.

The bank’s loss is not yet known, he said.

People with any information about the incident can call the Glendale Police Crime Stoppers line at (818) 507-7867.

Police to stage DUI checkpoint tonight

Glendale Police are scheduled to conduct a sobriety checkpoint today beginning at 7:30 p.m. and ending at 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

The checkpoint is intended to raise public awareness about the dangers of drunk driving, as the coming Cinco de Mayo holiday approaches, Sgt. Dennis Smith said.

“We’re trying to send a message out to don’t drink and drive, and if you are going to drink, have someone there to drive you,” he said.

The department is also planning to conduct checkpoints on May 3 and 4. The exact location will be released two hours before the checkpoints are opened.

For more information, contact the department’s traffic bureau at (818) 548-3130.
