Glendale’s police chief on top list for sheriff

Glendale Police Chief Randy Adams has made it to the list of top nine candidates in the Orange County Board of Supervisors’ search for a new sheriff.

The announcement, made Friday, puts Adams into contention with acting Orange County Sheriff Jack Anderson, former Sheriff’s Lt. Bill Hunt and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Cmdr. Ralph Martin.

The county received 48 applications from across the country when then-Sheriff Michael Carona resigned his position to fight federal corruption charges. Other remaining candidates include Santa Ana Police Chief Paul Walters, Salt Lake County undersheriff Beau Babka, San Bernardino Undersheriff Richard Beemer, retired Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Division Chief Sandra Hutchens and Anaheim Deputy Police Chief Craig Hunter.

Dance event is today at community college

Chuck Maldonado — choreographer for the film “Stomp the Yard” and for several music videos, iPod commercials, Grammy performances and the 1996 Olympics — will be the featured guest at the High School Dance Day today at Glendale Community College.

The event, in which students from throughout the area can participate in myriad dance classes, runs from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Sierra Nevada Gym Dance Theater and the Auditorium. Tickets for the live performances, which begin at 5 p.m., are $5 at the door.

Autism Alliance is holding picnic

The 10th annual Foothill Autism Alliance Picnic will take place today at Lower Scholl Canon Park and feature food, drinks, face painting, crafts, entertainment and prizes.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the alliance, a nonprofit organization. The event, at 2847 E. Glenoaks Blvd., is free to members and $7 for nonmember adults, and $3 for their children. Festivities start at noon and run until 3 p.m.
