New construction within the risk zones will have to comply with new state regulations that require fire-resistant materials.

The recommendations were developed by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and cross-checked by Glendale fire officials against their existing municipal map.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The ordinance will likely be approved since all cities are required to follow the state guidelines. The new map also roughly follows what city firefighters have been using all along.

2008-09 BUDGET

The City Council will hold a public hearing on the proposed 2008-09 budget.

The City Council last week balanced the draft budget by cutting the equivalent of 5% across all city departments. Those cuts translated into the tentative elimination of several community-based police programs, a staff reduction for Fire Station 23, the closing of the Chevy Chase Branch Library and other service reductions throughout the city.

The proposed general fund appropriation to the budget will be balanced at $162.6 million, which is 0.4% higher than last year. The total budget for the next fiscal year is $750.3 million.

The council must adopt a new budget on June 24 in time for the start of the new fiscal year, which starts July 1.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The City Council will likely take input from the public into consideration in their final consideration of the budget on June 24.
