On The Town:

League gives scholarship assistance

June 18, 2008|By RUTH SOWBY

Members of Glendale’s Assistance League don’t always toot their own horn. So when word of an event gets out, people listen. Eight Glendale students each received a $1,000 scholarship during the organization’s annual scholarship luncheon on June 10 at the Chapter House on East Harvard Street.

President Lina Harper welcomed members and guests. Paul Schlossman, dean of Student Affairs at Glendale Community College, reminded his audience that when the college opened in 1927, it was also on Harvard, “just down the street.”

He introduced the three college scholarship recipients — nursing student Nicole Morrow, re-entry student Janet Alexander and transfer student Fabiola Macias, who has just begun the summer semester at Cal State Los Angeles.

High school scholarship winners were Bella Arutyunyan, Odalis Suarez, Clairliz Pierre-Louise, Christina Der Sarkissian and Gina Ban.

Scholarship committee co-chairwomen were Betty Blanchette and Leni Richardson.

Scholarships represent one of nine philanthropic programs supported by the Assistance League. Major fundraisers are the Festival of Trees and its thrift store, The Thrift Alley, at 314-A E. Harvard St., Glendale.

Damon’s, that venerable steakhouse in Glendale, is 71 years old. Owners Patrick Campbell and Joe Ayvazi welcomed the public to the restaurant’s anniversary luau buffet on June 11 to benefit Glendale Healthy Kids.

Mai Tais and Chi Chis were flowing as hundreds of guests bought “All-You-Can-Drink (Responsibly)” tiki mugs for $20 and filled them to the brim. Another $20 bought an all-you-can-eat dinner of pupus (appetizers), salads and entrees of Hawaiian Kalua Pork, Chicken Adobo and Baked Teriyaki Glazed Mahi Mahi, accompanied by rice, broccoli and roasted red potatoes.

Hawaiian dancers greeted guests by slipping beaded necklaces on them to the music of the classic rock band Breakaway. Spotted in the crowd of responsible revelers were Harry Hall, Steve Ropfogel, Lois Sambar, Beverly Crabtree, Gail Farnsworth, JoAnn Hipp, the Alex Theatre’s Barry McComb and Elissa Glickman, Glendale FastFrame owner Vicki McConnell, Glendale Message Envy owner Helen McDonagh, her children Sarah Garsten, Niall Garsten and their dad Andrew Garsten.
