DCG slugs way to victory

Baseball: Bid to repeat as Knockout champion falls short for Foothill L.A. Family.

June 19, 2008|By Gabriel Rizk

MONTROSE — With the pride of a defending champion, Foothill L.A. Family battled back to cut into six- and seven-run deficits in the semifinal game of the District 16 Minor Baseball Knockout Tournament on Wednesday at Montrose Park.

But with Crescenta Valley DCG Electric coming up with one big hit after another with runners on base, L.A. Family could only get so close after playing catch-up all afternoon.

DCG Electric shortstop/pitcher Travis Westhoff scored from third base on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the final score 13-6 and set up a meeting in the tournament final on Saturday against either CV Andy’s Transfer and Storage or the Burbank Yankees.

“We couldn’t figure out who to give the game ball to tonight because everybody was crushing it,” DCG Electric Coach Todd Erickson said. “We had nice equal batting all throughout the order.”

DCG Electric strung together three runs in the bottom of the first inning beginning with a double to left field by Brian Erickson that plated Jake Whisenant.

With runners on second and third with two outs and Grant Kitchen at the plate, two more runs came in for DCG Electric when Sam Lindhorst scored on a wild pitch before Erickson scored on a passed ball.

DCG Electric went up 6-0 in the bottom of the second inning behind a pair of triples.

Louis Poblano led off the frame with a three-bagger and came home on a passed ball. With two outs, Chase Sanford tripled to score Nick Gonzalez and came home himself on a throwing error.

“We shut them down early in the game and took a little of the wind out of their sails,” Todd Erickson said.

L.A. Family, which won last year’s tournament with a 4-2 victory over the Burbank Braves, rallied in the third inning cut the lead to 6-3.

Ryan Keen reached on an error on a play that allowed Josh Cabello and Justin French to come home. Garrett Fritz then doubled in Keen.

DCG Electric took back the momentum with a four-run reply in the bottom of the third, capped off by a run-scoring triple by Kitchen.

“This is the best hitting team we’ve played all year,” L.A. Family Coach Rick Dickerson said. “Their form was good and they were making contact throughout the entire lineup.”

L.A. Family had another rally left, however.

Doug Schowengerdt singled to begin the inning and scored on an error. DCG Electric’s troubles in the field continued when Bryce Wong scored from third on a pitch in the dirt.

A throwing error on the same play allowed Cabello to score from first base to cut the lead to 10-6, but DCG Electric countered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.

“I’m real proud of our kids,” Dickerson said. “They’ve come from behind before — we’ve won four of five games in the last inning this season.”
