TENNIS PLAYER
MAKES U.S. TEAM
Fourteen-year-old Glendale tennis standout Alexios Halebian was one of three boys selected to the United States Tennis Assn. World Junior Tennis team as announced in a USTA press release on Friday.
Halebian and his teammates are already in the Czech Republic for the World Junior Tennis Competition Finals, which will take place Monday through Aug. 9.
Halebian is joined by Tyler Gardiner of Michigan and Christian Harrison of Texas. The team is coached by Kent Kinnear.
Halebian, who will begin training full-time at the USTA training facility in Boca Raton, Fla. in September, is currently ranked seventh in the USTA Boys’ 14s. He recently won the USTA National Boys’ 14s Clay Court Championships, where he beat Gardiner.

STARTING STRONG
Glendale resident Gapo Tolmajyan improved to 2-0 on his young career with a pro boxing victory on Saturday in Fresno.
Tolmajyan, a southpawwho trains at Edmond Tarverdyan’s Glendale Fighting Club scored a four-round unanimous decision over Bakersfield’s Edgar Jauregui, who was making his professional debut in the junior featherweight bout.
Tolmajyan, according to hyefighters.com, will waste no time getting back in the ring. He’s scheduled to fight again on Friday in Sacramento.
He’s also slated to fight on Sept. 19 in Woodland Hills as Art of Boxing Promotions presents A Night of Boxing: Warner Center War II. Also scheduled to fight will be Glendale’s Art “Lionheart” Hovhannesyan and Vito “Casper” Gasparyan.
Advertised special guests will include undefeated Glendale boxing phenom Vanes Martirosyan, Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight contender Karo Parisyan and renowned boxing trainer Freddie Roach, among others.
The card will take place at the Warner Center Marriott at 21850 Oxnard St.

MAGAKIAN WINS

A trio of mixed martial arts fighters who train at Roma Kalantaryan’s Main Event Gym in Glendale were scheduled to fight on July 26.
Only Sevak Magakian did, however.
The Glendale resident evened his record at 2-2 with a first-round submission victory via armbar.
Glendale resident Karen Karabedyan and Ando Dermenjyan had their fights canceled as their opponents were unable to fight due to injuries, according to Kalantaryan.
