GLENDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE:Making a State-ment

A State-title-winning cross-country team and some coaching milestones made the season one to remember

May 2 — For two Glendale college singles players and two doubles teams, their bids to reach the state tournament ended at the Southern California Individual Regional Tournament.

Sophomore men’s singles player Matthew Taoatao saw his season come to a close after the 13th-seed dropped a 6-1, 6-2 loss to fourth-seeded Matthias Muster of Ventura College in a round-of-16 match at Riverside Community College. The unseeded doubles team of freshmen Emanuel Haug and Ryan Stanbury of Glendale college suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss to top-seeded Waylon Bennett and Olumide Sherman-Norman of Orange Coast College.

Taoatao was tabbed the conference’s co-player of the year with Hassan Abbas of Ventura College. Taoatao and Greg Arutyunyan pick up second-team honors in singles, while Emanuel Haug and Ryan Stanbury and Taoatao and Arutyunyan picked up honorable mention in doubles after the Vaqueros finished 8-12 and 5-5 in conference.

On the women’s side, unseeded freshman Meldia Hacopian of Glendale college suffered a 1-6, 7-6(7-4), 4-6 loss to sixth-seeded Annika You of Cerritos College at Santa Barbara City College. Hacopian and teammate Monique Palmera then fell to second-seeded Brittany Bass and Brittney Furuvald of Orange Coast College, 6-1, 6-2. The Vaqueros, who finished 5-8 and 3-7 in conference had several women’s tennis squad named to the all-conference team. Hacopian and Sonia Rodriguez earned spots on the second team. In doubles, Rodriguez and Miyuki Yokozuka were named to the second team. The duo fell in a second-round match in the conference tournament.

May 16 — Despite a stifling heat wave that gripped most of the Southland, Berg manages to overcome the uncomfortable conditions to win the 10,000-meter race in 36 minutes 40.94 seconds in the California Community College Track and Field Championships at Cerritos College. It marked the second year in a row that Berg captured the event.

May 17 — Berg becomes a two-time state champion in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 17 minutes 18.98 seconds at Cerritos College. Wadeck put on a late surge to secure third place in the 5,000 with a time of 18:10.61 and Zitlalic Ley finished ninth in 19:42.98 to help boost the Vaqueros women’s team into an eighth-place overall finish with 41 points. Wadeck finished second in the 1,500 in 4:46.94 after capturing the Western State Conference and the Southern California championships. Ley also finished fifth (11:50.96) in the 3000-meter steeplechase, an event in which she won a conference title. Ashley Baucham placed sixth (5 feet 3 inches) in the high jump.

In the men’s portion of the meet, sophomore Michael Flowers finished 11th (10:08.85) in the 3,000 steeplechase. In the field events, James Poet notched a personal best of 49.21 meters in the hammer throw for sixth place.
