COURLAS

George and Georgia Courlas celebrated their 50th anniversary on June 22 at their home in Glendale.

The couple met in 1958 while sailing down the Mississippi River during a Greek fraternity party.

After their first dance on the boat overlooking the river, the two married one year later at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Downey.

George, a three-time Purple Heart recipient during World War II, worked for 35 years at the Glendale branch of IBM and retired in the 1980s. He graduated from Woodbury University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Georgia was a legal secretary for Minnesota Gov. Orville Freeman. Both are now retired and are planning a trip to Oklahoma for a reunion of George’s World War II infantry in September.

The couple have one daughter, Elaine Mendez, who was recently married and lives in Orange County.
