Police used the witness’ video footage — showing the pursuit, images of a 2001 BMW X5 and its license plate — to trace the sport utility vehicle back to the registered owner, Lorenz said.

One of Karapetyan’s parents owned the SUV, Lorenz said.

Prosecutors filed charges Tuesday against Karapetyan in connection with the pursuit.

He is charged with one count each of evading an officer with willful disregard, a felony; forgery of registration, a felony; and driving when privilege is suspended or revoked with priors, a misdemeanor, according to a criminal complaint.

The complaint indicates that Karapetyan was convicted twice for driving on a suspended California driver’s license in August 2006 in Glendale and February 2007 in San Fernando.

The complaint alleges Karapetyan intended to elude a police officer even after a lighted red lamp was displayed, sirens sounded and the officer was driving a marked car.

Karapetyan is charged with driving “with a willful wanton disregard for the safety of persons and property,” according to the complaint.

He also allegedly falsified registration for the BMW license plate, the complaint alleged.

The license plate was registered to his family member who lived in North Hollywood and drove a 1996 Infinity, Lorenz said.

During a surveillance of the North Hollywood residence, detectives saw that the Infinity was missing its front license plate, he said.
