A community theater company is bringing families together, whether it’s in the cast or the audience.

The Stepping Stone Players are in final rehearsals for “Once Upon a Mattress” opening Friday at Hoover High School’s Auditorium.

It’s the ninth production of the nonprofit theater group, whose vision is to build a sense of community through theater by encouraging the participation of people of all ages and backgrounds.

Over the years, more and more family members have auditioned and landed roles in the shows, said director Susan Kussman, who added that they got the roles on their own merit as individuals.

“Parents want to do a show with their child,” she said. “It’s a great thing for them. I never did any theater with my mother or father, but it seems like it’s happening more and more.”

Ken Campo of Glendale, his wife, Linda Lopez Campo, and daughter Gabriela Campo have been with the group for five years, he said.

“My wife started with the group performing in the show ‘West Side Story,’” he said. “She played the starring role of Anita.”

The following year, Gabriela auditioned and made a dancer in the chorus of “Music Man” and a year later in “Guys and Dolls.”

Last year, all four family members auditioned and were in “Oliver” including daughter Maria Campo, he said. His wife became a board member also last year, and this year she’s the house manager.

For “Once Upon A Mattress,” Ken Campo plays Sir Studley, and Gabriela Campo is again a dancer.

“Ken was a professional dancer,” Kussman said. “He has taken a small role and made it into a masterpiece. He’s just wonderful. He plays Studley the Knight. Gabby is way beyond her years in talent. She has studied dance a long time, and boy, can she dance.”

Ken Campo, who has been acting since college, is a senior vice president of Questar Entertainment in Burbank, which produces and distributes family shows for TV and home video.

Since he travels a lot for work, acting with the community theater group allows him to spend time doing something fun with his family, he said.
