On The Town:

Women flock to hear war stories

September 17, 2008|By RUTH SOWBY

The clubhouse of the La Crescenta Woman’s Club on Thursday was just about filled to capacity with some 125 supporters who turned out to hear the close friend and Prisoner of War roommate of John McCainJohn McCain, Jon Fer.

Col. Fer, retired from the U.S. Air Force, was shot down over Vietnam in February 1967, three months before McCain was shot down. For more than two years, the two shared a cell or an adjacent cell in the Hanoi Hilton.

“I liked him right off the bat,” Fer said.

A potluck dinner kicked off the evening. Club President and Event Chairwoman Karen Suter welcomed members and guests. Glendale residents included Lucille Mellon, Ethel Galleger, Marilyn Williams, Sylvia Bedach, Shirley Darling and sisters Doris and Dorothy Dash.

La Crescenta regulars included Danette Erickson and Sally Benson. This time, Benson had some help with dinner. She still made three casseroles, “just in case.”

The second annual “Popcorn, Pearls . . . & Paul” fundraiser at the Glendale home of Paula and Art Devine on Friday offered a lot for the money.

For $25, some 100 Glendale “Relay for Life” supporters were treated to a multi-course buffet dinner, dessert, champagne, wine, silent auction and concurrent screenings of four Paul Newman movies — “Butch Cassidy,” “The Sting,” “The Verdict” and “Cool Hand Luke.”

Commissioners from the Glendale Commission on the Status of Women were out in force including Vice Chairwoman Paula Devine, Elizabeth Manasserian, yours truly and former commissioner Lisa Koontz. Commissioner Laura Friedman from the Design Review Board was also on hand.

Also present were Glendale Arts Associate Director Elissa Glickman, Glendale College Foundation board member Mike Haney and his wife, Connie Haney, Glendale Adventist’s Mari Abrams, co-chairwoman for Glendale “Relay for Life,” and Jolene Taylor, co-team captain with Paula Devine on “Hope Rises 4 a Cure” relay ream.

Glendale residents who found it tough to decide which Paul Newman film to see included Liza Boubari, Lynda Burns, Zar Ghazarian, Nancy Burke, Brian Ellis, Jane Garcin and Aram and Cris Kazazian.

Silent auction prizes included two nights at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills, one night at Shutters in Santa Monica and, of course, pearls.

The evening’s proceeds will support the American Cancer Society.
