Jewish High Holy Days approaching

The sound of the Shofar (ram’s horn) signals that the Jewish New Year 5769 is upon us. The Temple Sinai of Glendale cycle of religious services commemorating the Jewish New Year includes rejoicing and repentance, Hebrew and English, music and worship.

Rosh Hashanah services will be held at 8 p.m. Sept. 29 and 10 a.m. Sept. 30.

There is a family service at 3 p.m. Sept. 30 intended for children.

Services for Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, will begin with:

A Kol Nidre service at 10 a.m. Oct. 9, with a family service at 2 p.m. and an afternoon service at 3 p.m.

Rabbi Rick Schechter and Cantor Mariana Gindlin will lead the synagogue in all services. Interfaith couples and families are welcome.

Temple Sinai is at 1212 N. Pacific Ave. in Glendale.

No tickets or reservations are required for the family services.

Unity’s Church of the Valley presents a new meditation class, now through Oct. 22. The morning class meets at 11 a.m., and the evening class meets at 7. The six-week class is on guided meditation, facilitated by the Rev. Jeri Linn. The title of the class series is “Inner Visions,” inspired by the work of Dr. Ira Progoff and The Intensive Journal Workshop.

Meditation themes include: “The White Robed Monk,” the “Star/Cross” and “The Well and the Cathedral.” For more information, call the church office at (818) 249-4396.

‘Muslims Through the Eyes of Jesus’

The Rev. Kevin Higgins, international director of worldwide missionary organization Global Teams, will speak at St. Luke’s of the Mountains Anglican Church fron 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 21 on “Muslims Through the Eyes of Jesus.”

Higgins, a former member and youth minister at St. Luke’s, will relate some of his personal experiences in Pakistan and other Muslim nations in sharing faith, leadership training, and relief and development work with their people.
