Hoover High teacher honored with award

RaeEtta Emmett, who teaches a specialized English program at Herbert Hoover High School, was one of 16 teachers who were honored Monday as the 2008-09 county “Teachers of the Year.”

Los Angeles County Supt. Of School Darline Robles handed out the awards to the “Sweet 16” group of educators in public schools from throughout the county.

The annual competition is the largest of its kind in the state, where the number of awardees is based on a proportional formula to the number of students in the county. There are roughly 80,000 students in the county.

The winners are interviewed after submitting essays, lesson plans and other materials to the judging panels. The group of winners, which received awards in Universal City, automatically advance to the statewide competition later this fall. The five co-winners from that round are scheduled to be announced mid-November. From that set, one will be selected to represent the state in the nationwide contest.
