Cho helps Harvard pick up a victory in tournament

Former CV golfer fitting right in with Crimson; trio of FSHA alums take to the pitch.

GLENDALE — The following are updates on area athletes at the collegiate level.

Christine Cho (Crescenta Valley High, 2008) freshman, Harvard University women’s golf: Cho, the reigning All-Area Female Golfer of the Year, and the Crimson are off to an impressive start this season.

Despite battling poor weather conditions, Harvard battled to win the Yale Fall Intercollegiate at the Yale University Golf Course on Sunday. The Crimson finished four strokes ahead of the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Cho, who helped Crescenta Valley win two consecutive Pacific League championships, fired a four-over-par 75 to spark the Crimson.

Cho also excelled to help the Crimson win the Princeton Invitational on Sept. 21 at Springdale Country Club. She notched a one-over-par 73 during the first round Sept. 20 before posting a 77 on the final round for a 150.

Harvard will next participate in the Kelly Gutshall Invitational, which will take place Oct. 24-26 at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa.

Brett Kanda (Flintridge Prep, 2005) redshirt junior, UNLV men’s golf: Kanda, selected the 2005 All-Area Boys’ Golfer of the Year after he captured the CIF/Southern California Golf Assn. Final and placed sixth at the CIF-California Golf Assn. State Championship, helped UNLV win the William H. Tucker Invitational on Saturday at the University of New Mexico’s Championship Course in Albuquerque.

Kanda tied for 11th at one-over-par 71 on the final round to spur the Rebels. He entered the final round tied for 20th after carding a two-over 146.

UNLV, ranked No. 21 in the nation, shot a final-round five-under-par 283 on Saturday to capture the event by 11 shots at 12-under 852.

The Rebels entered the final round five strokes behind host New Mexico, but turned in a score that was 16 shots better than the Lobos on Saturday to win its first tournament this season.

UNLV will next compete Oct. 13-14 at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala.

Carly Crowder (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2008) freshman forward, UC Irvine women’s soccer: The former All-Area first-team member and All-CIF pick, notched her first career assist in Irvine’s 3-2 victory against Weber State on Sept. 19 in a UC Irvine Invitational match. She assisted on the winning goal by Kate Berrini in the 88th minute.

Crowder had one shot on goal during Irvine’s 2-1 nonconference home victory against Pepperdine on Sunday. She’s recorded eight shots on goal in 11 matches played this season.
