Community Commentary:

Resume doesn’t tell the full, artful story

October 06, 2008|By Al Hofmann

It has been alluded to that Councilman Bob Yousefian’s nomination of me to serve on the Arts and Culture Commission is somehow a political move on his and my part.

Nothing is further from the truth.

When I served on the Citizens’ Group Advisory Group working on the Downtown Strategic Plan, one of the issues discussed was the need to create a focal point for the arts in the downtown area. We all agreed that the Alex Theatre should be the hub for such an activity.

I really championed this, as I have long believed that support of arts and culture in Glendale had been left far behind.

I made several proposals, the most major of which was that the Dorn Platz building north of the Alex be removed in favor of a structure that included art studios and galleries on the lower level, with affordable lofts on the upper floors. One person even suggested that we include an art museum in this facility.

On the south end, I proposed that the property owned by the Redevelopment Agency north of Wilson Avenue between the alley on the east side of the Brand Boulevard commercial buildings to Maryland Avenue would make an ideal location for a park area.

I further suggested that the wall of the Alex Theatre would be an ideal projection space for showing special movies, and families could enjoy lying out on the grass with their box lunches, etc. This would also energize the Exchange area, which is in dire need of help.

I also suggested that all the commercial buildings south of the Alex be removed to extend the park area to Brand. However, then-Director of Planning Elaine Wilkerson suggested that these buildings be converted to eateries and social venues with patio areas on the alley side previously described. This was an ideal suggestion, as this area would make a great entrance to the Alex.

Another discussion point in the Strategic Plan meetings was the need to provide a new fire station for the downtown area. This could easily be integrated into the proposed new structure on Maryland north of the Alex.

Apparently, the Redevelopment Agency is planning to build yet another downtown hotel at the northwest corner of Maryland and Wilson. It is up to the City Council, with public input, to decide the fate of the property on the south side of the Alex Theatre.
