Glendale Unified School District Wrap-up

The school board discussed a district report about student permit policy, which regulates how students can gain access to specific schools.

The report included several suggestions for the board to give new priority for permits to students with special circumstances.

During the discussion, board Vice President Mary Boger criticized “confusing” language in the district’s assessment.

She also emphasized the board’s role in taking on the issue of permit policy, which had been proposed by district staff, adding that the regulations would be taken up with board involvement, whether the process involved a hybrid committee of board and staff members, or not.

The board will consider an approach for changing student permit policies, which regulate how students can gain permission to attend specific schools.

Assistant Supt. Kathy Fundukian presented a proposal for new high school cinematography courses.

The level-five and -six courses would prepare students for a certification exam and even for entry-level work in the film industry by building on skills developed in course levels three and four.

As a final product, students would produce a demo reel of their class films.

The district will take recommendations from teachers, then rewrite the proposal before presenting it to the board for approval.

The board approved a new agreement with School Wise Press for the production of electronic School Accountability Report Cards.

The agreement with School Wise Press, which provided the detailed digital reports last year, had not previously included Daily High School in its coverage and was edited.

WHAT IT MEANS

The district will offer detailed electronic reports, available for download from its website.

Last year’s reports included a large range of demographic information, test results and other measures of and influences on school performances.
