“I was frustrated with our doubles,” Davidson said. “I don’t think that they competed very well. I think that they used having Adrine hurt as an excuse.
“I think we were beat before we ever stepped out on the court today in doubles. They didn’t have the attitude that they could win and that’s what frustrates me.”
Something certainly appeared to be amiss with the Nitros, who were swept aside by the Apaches’ doubles teams without ever winning more than three games.
“We were afraid to go out and compete [Tuesday],” Davidson said. “That was big step back for our doubles.”
Left to shoulder the entire burden of evening the score, Glendale’s singles players fell short in that bid despite 6-3 and 6-1 wins for No. 1 singles player Sevana Zargarian.
Samantha Sismundo (6-1) and Hana Jong (7-5) also notched singles wins over Arcadia’s No. 1 singles player, Sneha Chintamanehi.
Zargarian and Sismundo came close to pulling off wins against Arcadia’s No. 3 player, Nadia Pacheco, but both lost, 7-5. Pacheco was the only player to sweep for either side.
“I knew we would do OK in singles, we could have easily gotten five [sets], maybe six,” Davidson said. “If the doubles had come through, it would have been a different match.”
With two matches to go in the regular season, the Nitros (8-7, 6-5 in league) are in a third-place tie with Burbank, trailing second-place Arcadia (14-4, 8-3).
Should Glendale remain tied with the Bulldogs through the end of the season, the Nitros would go into the playoffs as the third-place team, based on head-to-head success.
