Holy Family slips at home

Volleyball: Gaels swept by experienced Alverno in Horizon League match.

SOUTHEAST GLENDALE — With three matches left in the regular season, it’s difficult for first-year Holy Family volleyball Coach Michael Godoy to make an accurate assessment of his team.

It’s quite possible that the Gaels will qualify for the CIF playoffs in November, something they did last season.

With a mixture of some returning players and a few with little-to-no varsity experience, it’s almost a crapshoot as to what Godoy can expect to see each match.

“I wasn’t sure how they would react to the pressure,” said Godoy, whose team suffered a 25-16, 25-15, 25-20 Horizon League home loss to Alverno on Tuesday night at Maple Park. “We look good at times, then you can see our youth and inexperience showing because there’s not a lot of varsity experience here.

“We’ve been hanging in there, but it’s been tough.”

Holy Family (7-7, 3-2 in league) didn’t match up well with Alverno (14-8, 5-1). The Gaels couldn’t dictate a pace against the Jaguars, often surrendering multiple-point runs.

Alverno completed a two-match season series sweep of the Gaels, who lost in four games Thursday at Alverno. That will likely help the Jaguars cement second place.

The odds of the Gaels winning the league championship are slim, only because they have two matches next week against first-place Bishop Conaty-Loretto.

“I think they knew that they could compete with Alverno,” said Godoy, whose got a team-high six kills from senior middle blocker/outside hitter Tiare Smith. “We seemed to have the energy at times, then that level just seem to collapse.

“We need to find balance and consistency.”

Holy Family, which advanced to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division IV-A playoffs last season, built a 7-1 lead in the third game on a kill by senior middle blocker/opposite hitter Melissa Romero. The Gaels took a 13-8 lead before Alverno made a late charge to complete the sweep.

The second game saw Alverno jump out to a 12-4 lead before Holy Family cut the lead to 13-9 on a kill by Smith. However, the Jaguars went on an 8-1 run to quash Holy Family’s momentum.

A Smith kill evened the score at 6 in the first game. Alverno finished off the Gaels with an 8-2 run to capture the game.

Godoy said he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of winning the league crown.

“They want to try to get it,” Godoy said. “We’ve got to go 3-0 to get into that position.”
