SOUTHEAST GLENDALE — The Glendale YMCA Quarterback Club, in its 66th year, meets Tuesdays at the Elk’s Lodge. The following are odds and ends from the eighth meeting of the year.

TEAMWORK KEY TO

LATEST NITROS WIN

According to second-year Glendale High football Coach Rafik Thorossian, the 37-14 win over Burbank on Friday night that broke a three-game losing streak and gave the Nitros their first Pacific League win of the year didn’t come down to any one individual performance.

There were in fact plenty of those to choose from, such as quarterback Moises Chavez’s 331 passing yards and five touchdowns, as well as a four-touchdown reception night for Jordan Bradshaw. But Thorossian said the key to the win was the synergistic effect of all parts of the team playing well together.

“The defense has been playing great all year, they stopped Burbank when we needed them to and special teams came through once again,” Thorossian said. “Everything was working perfect.

“They played together as a team, and when you do that, a lot of things can go well for you.”

CV, HOOVER COACHES

OFFER MUTUAL PRAISE

In the wake of his team’s 47-7 loss to the Pacific League-leading Falcons on Friday, Tornadoes Coach Chris Long saluted counterpart Tony Zarrillo and his team on Tuesday for a game well played.

“My hat goes off to Tony and his coaches and his players,” Long said. “They all played an excellent game.”

Zarrillo had reciprocal praise for Long, taking note of Hoover’s perseverant play on Friday.

“The Hoover kids played wonderfully hard the other night,” said Zarrillo, whose team now heads into a showdown with Muir, the only other unbeaten team remaining in league, on Friday. “They took us a little bit by surprise with some of the things they were doing, especially from the defensive perspective, and caused us some problems in the first part of the game and made us work very hard to get our offense going.

“Good things will happen [with the Hoover program]. It’s only a matter of time.”
