Keeping up with the Foothills

November 14, 2008

I stopped by Crescenta Valley High School yesterday, Thursday, to drop off and pick up some Prom Plus information. I knew that the school was having its annual Veterans Day ceremony (the school was closed on both Monday and Tuesday, Veterans Day, and opted to hold the school-wide assembly on Thursday). As I was leaving the campus, heading to my car parked on Community Avenue, I stood aside as about 50 students dressed in their JROTC uniforms walked to the front of the school to raise the flag.

When I stepped outside, I saw several of the front office personnel standing respectfully on the sidewalk as the JROTC members quickly assembled into inspection formation. I didn’t realize what the ‘big deal’ was until I realized that the raising of the flag was the beginning of the Veterans Day services. We stood for a minute or two waiting until Sgt. Wilson Leguizamon, outfitted beautifully in his full uniform, came over and explained that they were expecting some dignitaries to arrive.

Soon after, some older gentlemen in military uniforms accompanied by Lt. Colonel Dave Worley came from the far side of the school and stood at attention during the raising of the flag and the playing of revelry. It was a wonderful few minutes and very somber; we looked to the sky as our colors gently waved back and forth.

Unfortunately, I had to leave, but next week student reporter Monica Lee will give a full report of all that took place at the school-wide assembly.

Unforeseeable business circumstances was the reason cited by Mothers Cookies for closing their doors rather unexpectedly in October. No more pink and white circus animal cookies that we grew up with. A sad commentary on how life changes for the worst in these tough economic times.
