“We support women who have gotten married, had children and want to get back in school,” Gelsinger said.

“We have a fund that we try to raise money for to help women get back into school and get their education and be able to get into the work force.”

Empowering women and children is important in giving back to the community, she said.

As a volunteer for the Community Police Partnership of Montrose, Gelsinger helps individuals who are housebound through the “Caring Caller” program, where she calls members of the community to check up on them and ask if they need service.

“We call them and find out how they’re doing, and we find out if they need any services like meals-on-wheels,” Gelsinger said.

“We recommend them for that.”

Gelsinger donates a variety of services to the local community and said the city is only as good as the participation of its volunteers.

“I don’t think [La Crescenta] would be the community it is if we didn’t have volunteers,” Gelsinger said. “A lot of people are like me and do it in the background, and I think that that’s how the area has stayed as nice as it has.”
