Former Vaquero excelling in Hawaii

Karasawa picks up conference academic award playing for Hawaii Pacific Oahu.

GLENDALE — The following are updates on area athletes at the collegiate level.

Mackenna Karasawa (Glendale Community College, 2008) junior guard, Hawaii Pacific University Oahu women’s basketball: Karasawa, who earned All-Western State Conference honors the past two seasons, was one of two members from the Hawaii Pacific women’s squad to secure PacWest weekly Honor Roll accolades between Dec. 29-Jan. 4.

Karasawa averaged 11.5 points, five assists and two steals per game in two conference contests. She made seven of 10 foul shots and made all four of her three-point shots.

Karasawa collected four points, two rebounds and two assists to help Hawaii Pacific notch a 67-61 win against Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday. Through Thursday, the Sea Warriors are 5-8 and 3-0 in conference.

She’s averaging 5.4 points per game and has collected 36 assists, 14 steals and eight rebounds in 12 games played this season.

Helen Suarez (Glendale Community College, 2007) junior guard, Cal State Monterey Bay women’s basketball: Suarez finished with 22 points Friday in Cal State Monterey’s 69-58 home loss to UC San Diego in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. contest.

On Thursday, Suarez notched 14 points in a 62-53 conference home loss to San Francisco State.

Entering Friday’s road conference game against Cal Poly Pomona, Suarez is averaging 15.6 points, which is second best on the team, and 4.4 rebounds per game for the Sea Otters (8-6 and 3-4 in conference). She’s recorded a team-leading 68 assists and 34 steals.

Sara Hollar (Flintridge Prep, 2007) sophomore, Wheaton College women’s swimming: Hollar, a La Crescenta resident, turned in some quality efforts last week for Wheaton.

Hollar, who also competed on Flintridge Prep’s girls’ soccer team, worked with Caitlin Glover, Samantha Farrell and Nicole Zais to win the 400-yard freestyle relay and help Wheaton pick up a 125-118 victory against Brandeis on Wednesday in a New England Small College Athletic Conference tri-meet.

Hollar also helped Wheaton take second in the 400 freestyle relay.

Jeanine Deno (Crescenta Valley High, 2004) senior guard, Cal Baptist women’s basketball: Deno finished with 10 points and a pair of rebounds in Cal Baptist’s 88-82 home loss to The Master’s College on Thursday in a Golden State Athletic Conference contest.
