LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE — Flintridge Prep girls’ water polo Coach Alex Supple couldn’t have asked for a better start.

It’s the middle and the end that once again doomed the Rebels.

Flintridge Prep allowed five unanswered goals in less than five minutes in the second quarter, as it suffered a 9-3 loss to visiting La Salle on Tuesday afternoon in a Prep League match.

The Rebels (4-7, 0-7 in league) jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second quarter before the Lancers (9-8, 3-2) made their move on offense to complete a two-match season-series sweep between the programs.

“I was ecstatic with the start,” said Supple, who saw his team lose its third consecutive match. “We are up 2-0 and we draw an ejection.

“Then I’m thinking we were surely in position to be up 3-0. At that point, we fell off.”

La Salle, which picked up an 11-6 victory against Flintridge Prep on Dec. 12, killed off Flintridge Prep’s man-advantage opportunity before pouncing on the Rebels for the remainder of the first half to take a 5-2 lead.

The Rebels, who went winless last year, grabbed a 1-0 lead on a goal by Morgan Marmaro with 2:21 left in the first quarter. They extended the lead to 2-0 on a man-advantage goal by Tori Glebocki with 6:23 remaining in the second quarter.

Ali Don scored a pair of man-advantage goals to highlight La Salle’s second-quarter surge. Her final goal gave the Lancers a 4-2 advantage with 1:52 left in the first half.

Flintridge Prep couldn’t contain La Salle.

“The second, and even third quarter, was where we got killed,” said Supple, who got a team-best two goals from Glebocki. “We can’t make excuses because we just don’t execute the way the top teams in our league do.

“We have even struggled to score goals on our counter-attacks.”

The Lancers took a 6-2 lead on a shot by Kelsey Nelson of La Salle, but Glebocki answered 36 seconds later to cut the deficit to 6-3.

Don paced La Salle, which scored on two of three man-advantage chances, with a match-high three goals.

Flintridge Prep converted on three of its 23 shots, something that wasn’t ignored by Supple.

“That’s been our whole problem throughout the year,” said Supple, whose team converted on one of its three man-advantage opportunities. “We go three for 23 [Tuesday] after we’ve gone two for 19 and three for 21 in other matches.

“If there’s a way for us to bounce back, it would be to win so we can get our confidence back.”

Flintridge Prep goalkeeper Patricia McGown had six saves. La Salle goalkeeper Lydia Kerns had 12 saves.

Flintridge Prep will next compete in another league home match at 2 p.m. Saturday against Mayfield.
