Glendale Unified School District Board Of Education Meeting Wrap-up

February 05, 2009

ACCOUNTABILITY REPORT CARDS

Glendale Unified School District officials told the Board of Education they had posted the latest School Accountability Report Cards on the district’s website.

The report cards are available for each school in two formats: summary and detailed.

The summary reports offer one-page glimpses at student-to-teacher ratios and multiple student performance measures.

The detailed reports can be more than 40 pages long and include analyses of student performance that are broken down to a range of subgroups and categories.

CALENDAR APPROVED

The board approved the district’s 2009-10 calendar.

Classes will begin Aug. 31 and the academic year will end June 30, 2010.

District officials had been hoping to shift the calendar to more of a college-style academic year, with winter break coming after the completion of the first semester, but the Glendale Teachers Assn. rejected their proposal because it was brought to the union too late.

WHAT IT MEANS

The academic calendar for the 2009-10 school year will be very similar to the current calendar. The calendar was approved, 3-0.

TARGET FIELD TRIP GRANT

The board voted to accept a field trip grant from the Target corporation.

The retail giant awarded $800 grants to 5,000 educators in 2009, including Valley View Elementary School teacher Charlotte Fuglie-Briner.

Fuglie-Briner plans to use the funds to take her first-grade class to a performance of “If You Give A Kid A Pancake” at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in April.

The students will have to read the story in advance of the play.

WHAT IT MEANS

The board voted 3-0 to accept the grant.
