Ten Years Ago

Operations Lieutenant Ralph Martin, who had worked at the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station for seven years, was named the new chief’s aide at the Monterey Park Sheriff’s Station. Then-CV Commander Capt. Garry Leonard said the well-respected Martin would be difficult to replace at the local station.

Twenty Years Ago

Nearly 30 hopefuls were in the race for a seat on the newly formed La Crescenta Town Council, with the first election set for March 9, 1989. Three representatives would be seated on the advisory board from each of the three U.S. Census tracts, plus one alternative from each.

Thirty Years Ago

The Bank of America branch near Pennsylvania Avenue was robbed shortly after 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 9, 1979, in the presence of about 20 customers. It was the sixth hold-up of a major Foothill Boulevard business in a three-month span.

Forty Years Ago

Although the local drug use violations rate here was one of the lowest in L.A. County, arrests were clearly rising in the Foothills involving suspected narcotics users, according to the Montrose Sheriff’s Station. A report showed that there had been a single narcotics-related arrest in 1964, four in 1965, 15 in 1966, 28 in 1967, 56 in 1968 and, between January and mid-February of 1969 there were already nine such arrests.

Fifty Years Ago

Local opposition was forming to the county’s proposed sale of Descanso Gardens, a move suggested in early February 1959 by a member of the Board of Supervisors. The county had purchased the botanical showplace from Manchester Boddy for just over $1 million in 1953.
