LA CRESCENTA — Police were searching Friday night for a motorist who hit a 26-year-old man in an electrical wheelchair and fled.

The man was crossing New York Avenue just south of Foothill Boulevard about 6:30 p.m. Friday when a motorist struck him, Glendale Police Lt. Carl Povilaitis said.

The motorist’s car hit the man, ejecting him from his wheelchair and onto the ground, Povilaitis said. The motorist’s car continued to push the wheelchair about 25 feet before it fled the scene, he said.

The impact of the crash broke the man’s wheelchair into several pieces, Povilaitis said. The man was taken to a hospital, but his condition was unknown as of press time Friday.

The driver may have been driving a white or light-colored Volkswagen, possibly a Jetta, Povilaitis said.

Anyone with details about the crash or the motorist is urged to call the Glendale Police Department at (818) 548-4840 or Glendale Crime Stoppers at (818) 507-7867.
