Historians would all agree that the phrase about “other nationalities” was largely in response to the Armenian genocide.

Wilson predicted that World War I would be the “war to end all wars.” But in fact, for almost 100 years, Americans have continued the struggle to make “the world safe for democracy.” Perhaps that struggle derives from the fact that we are largely a nation of immigrants.

We realize more than any other nation that our freedom is their freedom, and that their freedom is ours. As long as it is understood that this is what the American flag represents, I would be proud that our flag would be included in a commemoration of the Armenian Genocide.

Let’s junk some of these pickup dates

Glendale currently sends its “garbage” trucks around every week to pick up garbage, recyclables and yard cuttings. I suggest that the recycling and yard cuttings barrels be picked up on alternate weeks. This should reduce the trucks circulating each week by one third. I realize this would not result in a 33 1/3 % savings, because it will take the recycling and yard cuttings trucks longer to complete their routes, but it should still result in a substantial savings, to say nothing of fewer noisy trucks on our quiet street every week.

Not a glorious time for Glendale

In postwar 1940s through the 1970s, we proudly claimed Glendale had the lowest utility rates, the finest schools, the safest streets and parks, the greatest school programs and winning teams.

Today, Glendale has the second-highest utility rates in Southern California, high taxes, unsafe streets and parks, dangerous drivers, crowded schools and high-paid city employees, millions of dollars in bond debt ... now three council-seeking incumbents!

What a future.
