Stepping back in time

February 20, 2009

As Johnson sang, his backup singers moved fluidly behind him, perfectly in sync with each other. Each movement was measured, timed expertly. I think my mouth hung open the whole time they were on stage. My enthusiasm was obviously matched by the audience’s; The Flamingos’ performance brought down the house.

Of course, a highlight of the evening was Deke & the Blazers.

Saturday’s performance was the first major local one for the group. At Segerstrom Hall, supporters for Jan were out en masse. About 50 of us were seated together, quietly wishing Deke & the Blazers well. My neighbor, Sue, was seated next to me.

“I don’t know why I’m so nervous,” she whispered. I, too, shared her jitters as Jan and his group strolled onto the stage.

Our concerns were unnecessary. With perfect pitch, these a capella singers wowed the audience.

However, I don’t think anyone enjoyed the show more than Mrs. Deke, Jan’s wife Nancy, who was publicly serenaded with, “I’m In Love With A Wonderful Girl.”

I’m sure that, especially for her, it was a Valentine’s Day she’d never forget.
