It appears as if they’re running a golf course, with the sprinklers and weekly mowing and leaf-blowing during morning rush.
Also, the purple flowering trees are pretty, but aren’t they thirstier than other native varieties? Why not replace them over time with coastal live oaks that seem to be all over the place next door in Altadena and Pasadena?
If the city put in some native or more California-friendly plants and encouraged homeowners to do the same, we would all save a bundle on our water bills.

Attack on teachers union unwarranted
I am puzzled and saddened by the recent letter appearing in your paper signed by three local teachers (“Union leader doesn’t speak for all teachers,” Letter to the Editor, Thursday).
These teachers claim that “board members, as well as district administrators, have suffered unnecessary personal attacks” by union leaders. Aside from the awkward misplaced modifier, I notice that these three teachers do not document in any manner how or when such “attacks” took place.
As far as I can discern, no board member has been called names. The current union leadership has simply asked a number of questions in public. In logic, such questions are called conditionals — e.g., if you claim to believe this, then why do you act thus? Such questions cannot rationally be construed as “personal attacks.”
These three teachers then go on to claim that “our leadership has too often resorted to polarizing tactics and made negotiations unnecessarily adversarial.” Again, no proof is offered of such claims — no examples cited, no dates given.
