Board approves home expansion

March 06, 2009

Glendale’s Design Review Board #2 has approved a proposed addition to a home on Altura Avenue which is three times larger than the existing structure.

The home is a 942-square-foot structure on a flag lot at 3427 Altura Ave., not visible from the street and accessed by a 210-foot driveway. The owner, Zoric Shahbazi, said he wanted to build a 2,029-square-foot addition to meet the needs of his family.

Review board members had some design questions, but decided the fact that the addition was not visible from the street made most issues moot.

Not taking that position was chairman Alan Melekian, who voted against approval

Board member Alek Zarifian, who ended up voting for approval, pointed out that the board retains design review responsibilities even if the home isn’t very visible to the public.

Member Mike Geragos said his major concern was the height of walls around the project, which he said reached as high as 16 feet, though he didn’t press the issue and also voted to approve.

Two possible conditions suggested by staff, to use real rock on the exterior and to use fiberglass instead of vinyl windows, were inserted as considerations in the final approval.
